What is a knee immobilizer?

A knee immobilizer, also known as a knee splint, is a product that limits knee movements after an injury or trauma to the knee. It allows the knee to heal properly and prevents it from getting re-injured.

Who needs a knee immobilizer?

A knee immobilizer is used by individuals with injuries such as Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), Medial/Lateral Collateral (MCL/LCL), Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL), and Meniscus Cartilage Injury. It is also often used by patients who have had a total knee replacement, ligament tear, and fracture.
It is used during physiotherapy and also for early cast removal.

Why is it a knee immobilizer needed?

It is absolutely essential for the knee to be kept still during the healing period as unnecessary movements (such as tossing around during sleep), can re-injure the knee and retard the healing process.
However, it is ill-advised to use it longer than indicated by the doctor as it can lead to severe loss of motion in the knee.
